JAKARTA, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Mount Merapi in Indonesia emitted incandescent lava 12 times as far as 1,200 meters to the southwest until 6:00 a.m. local time Tuesday, the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center said on Tuesday.

The center's head Hanik Humaida said Merapi also released 31 avalanches for 10 to 128 seconds.

"Merapi emitted thick white smoke as high as 50 meters above the crater, while the weather was sunny and cloudy," said Humaida.

On Monday, Mount Merapi belched incandescent lava 47 times as far as 1,200 meters to the southwest towards the upstream of the Krasak and Boyong rivers.

Authorities have recommended that travelers do not move to dangerous areas within a radius of 5 km from the summit.

The authorities have also prohibited mining activities in rivers that originate from Merapi, namely Kuning, Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng and Putih rivers.

Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia, located in the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta.

In 2010, the volcano's eruption killed more than 200 people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. Enditem
