BERLIN, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The HeidelbergCement Group, one of the world's largest building materials companies, said Tuesday its result from current operations before depreciation and amortization (RCOBD) increased by 6.1 percent year-on-year to 3.7 billion euros (4.5 billion U.S. dollars) for full fiscal year 2020.

Its revenues decreased by 4.6 percent to 17.6 billion euros last year, according to preliminary, unaudited figures of the German company headquartered in Heidelberg. The final financial report is scheduled for March 18.

"We closed the 2020 financial year with a top result," said Dominik von Achten, chairman of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement, in a statement. "We managed to more than compensate for the coronavirus-related decline in sales volumes through consistent spending discipline."

Following the sharp drop in sales volumes of HeidelbergCement in the second quarter during the first COVID-19 lockdowns, "demand increased significantly again in the following months, but was unable to fully compensate for the losses by the end of the year."

HeidelbergCement is expecting that demand would "develop positively in many markets" this year.

"We have made a good start to 2021," said von Achten. Overall, however, the situation could not yet be assessed well, he said.

At the same time, the company would follow its "ambitious sustainability goals." By 2025, HeidelbergCement is aiming to reduce specific net CO2 emissions to below 525 kilograms per ton of cementitious material, a 30 percent reduction from 1990 levels. Enditem
