ISLAMABAD, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani army said Tuesday night that security forces killed a terrorist commander during an operation in the country's northwestern tribal district of North Waziristan.

An army statement said that the killed terrorist commander of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Hafiz Gul Bahadur group was involved in the killing of four women workers in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan on Monday.

The Hafiz Gul Bahadur group was influential in North Waziristan tribal area until 2014 when the army launched a major operation against the militants.

The statement from the army's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations said security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in Mir Ali on confirmation of presence of terrorists, and during the exchange of fire, the terrorist commander was killed.

The statement said the killed terrorist remained involved in terrorist activities against security forces and civilians including improvised explosive device attacks, kidnapping for ransom, target killing, extortion and also involved in recruiting terrorists.

A cache of arms and weapons was recovered and sanitization was carried out by security forces, according to the statement.

Located along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, North Waziristan used to be a hotbed of militancy, but security forces have successfully flushed out the terrorists from the area in offensives though sporadic attacks by the militants have continued in the area. Enditem
