VALLETTA. Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- One of the three men accused of planting a car bomb that killed Maltese anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017 has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in jail, Prime Minister Robert Abela said on Tuesday.

He said his cabinet of ministers had also accepted a pardon request by the same man, Vincent Muscat, for him to turn into the state witness over the homicide of a lawyer in 2015. The pardon request was upheld following the joint advice of the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General, he said.

Muscat was jailed 15 years following an agreement he struck with the prosecution and after a judge noted that he had cooperated with police in the case that had rocked the Mediterranean island.

Another two men are still awaiting trial over the October 2017 murder, while a businessman, Yorgen Fenech, is also awaiting trial for allegedly masterminding the murder.

In a statement, Caruana Galizia's family expressed hope that "this development will begin the road for total justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia." Enditem
