Live COVID-19 updates: Thailand receives 1st batch of vaccines from China's Sinovac

BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BANGKOK -- The first batch of COVID-19 vaccines that Thailand ordered from China's Sinovac Biotech arrived in the capital Bangkok Wednesday, putting the country on track to kickstart its national inoculation program.

The 200,000 doses, the first shipment among 2 million doses Thailand ordered from the Chinese biopharmaceutical firm, were delivered by a Thai Airways International cargo flight from Beijing to Bangkok.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Wednesday confirmed 40 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 633, said a Ministry of Health (MoH) statement.

The new infections included 38 locally transmitted cases in capital Phnom Penh and southern Kandal province and two imported cases, the statement said, adding that the patients are undergoing treatment at various designated COVID-19 hospitals.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland reported no new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the National Health Commission said Wednesday.

The commission received reports of 12 new imported COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Three new suspected cases from outside the mainland were reported in Shanghai. No new deaths related to the disease were reported, according to the commission.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 440 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 88,120.

The daily caseload was up from 356 in the previous day, rising above 400 for three days.

BRASILIA -- Brazil has confirmed 204 cases of infection with variants of the coronavirus, including the variants first detected in Brazil and the United Kingdom, the Health Ministry's Health Surveillance Secretariat (SVS) reported on Tuesday.

Of these cases, 184 correspond to the P.1 variant first detected in Brazil, and 20 to the variant first reported in the United Kingdom, the SVS said.

PARIS -- French health authorities on Tuesday reported 20,064 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, up from 4,646 on Monday and from 19,590 last Tuesday.

Since the outbreak, 3,629,891 people were diagnosed with COVID-19, the world's sixth highest tally after the United States, India, Brazil, Russia and Britain.

HAVANA -- Cuba on Tuesday reported 836 COVID-19 infections in 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 46,197, as well as four more deaths for a total of 304, the Ministry of Public Health said.

According to the ministry's report, among the recorded cases, 824 were community transmitted and 12 were imported.

BUCHAREST -- The number of coronavirus-related fatalities in Romania reached 20,013 on Tuesday after a further 119 patients died in the past 24 hours, the latest official data showed.

The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases stands at 784,711 in the nation of some 19 million people, up 3,382 from the previous day, according to the Strategic Communication Group (GCS), Romania's official COVID-19 communication task force. Enditem
