SKOPJE, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The cumulative total of confirmed coronavirus cases in North Macedonia exceeded 100,000 on Wednesday as the Health Ministry reported 725 new infections in a single day.

Over the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry, medical staff conducted 3,342 COVID-19 tests, of which 725 returned positive, raising the total tally of COVID-19 cases in the country to 100,632 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Thirteen patients diagnosed with coronavirus lost their lives in the past 24 hours, taking the number of fatalities to 3,098.

Meanwhile, 215 people recovered from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 90,311.

The second shipment of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccines -- 3,510 doses for 8,190 shots -- arrived in North Macedonia from Serbia on Wednesday, the Media Information Agency (MIA) reported. The first batch of 4,680 vaccine doses had arrived in North Macedonia on Feb. 14.

North Macedonia's Health Minister Venko Filipce said on Wednesday that 1,300 health professionals had already been vaccinated in the country.

As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, vaccination is underway in some countries with the already-authorized coronavirus vaccines.

Meanwhile, 255 candidate vaccines are still being developed worldwide -- 73 of them in clinical trials -- in countries including Germany, China, Russia, Britain and the United States, according to information released by the World Health Organization on Tuesday. Enditem
