DAMASCUS, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Health Minister Hasan Ghabbash said on Thursday that Syria will start giving COVID-19 vaccines to its medical staff from next week.
In a press conference, the minister said the Syrian government had obtained the vaccine from a "friendly country" without naming it.
He said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad gave the orders to give the vaccine first to the medical workers. The vaccine has been approved by the Syrian medical authorities and has been used in other countries, and proved to be safe and effective in protecting against the virus without notable side effects.
The next stage, the minister continued, is to give the vaccine to people over 55, mainly those with chronic diseases.
The minister pointed out that the vaccine will be given to people who choose to take it, which is not mandatory. Enditem
