NEW YORK, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- New York City's latest COVID-19 test positivity rate on a seven-day average went down to 7.12 percent, compared with 7.15 percent one day earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted on Thursday.

Meanwhile, de Blasio said that there were 259 new hospital admissions and new cases of the coronavirus reached 3,158. "If you're not yet eligible to get vaccinated, you can still help drive this back by getting tested."

According to the mayor's office, "1,614,585 doses of #COVID19 vaccine have been administered (in NYC). That's more than the population of Philadelphia. We received a huge supply of vaccine and are adding capacity this week."

As the mayor announced earlier, NYC middle schools resumed in-person classes on Thursday, welcoming an estimated 62,000 students and 16,000 staff back into school buildings. Elementary schools have been open for in-person learning since December, along with preschools and District 75 schools for students with more complex needs.

The account of the city government tweeted on Thursday, "Today we're welcoming our 6th-8th graders back to @NYCSchools buildings for in-person learning! We're ready to provide safe classroom instruction for our middle schoolers."

As of Wednesday afternoon, coronavirus deaths added up to 29,025 and confirmed cases 694,438 in NYC, according to The City, a project that tracks the spread of confirmed COVID-19 infections and fatalities in New York City, based on information provided by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the governor's office, The COVID Tracking Project and the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
