UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations and humanitarian partners are getting more aid to some of the 170,000 people displaced by recent intercommunal violence in West Darfur, a UN spokesman said on Thursday.

"We and our partners have provided one month's worth of food rations, as well as water and sanitation services to more than 70,000 displaced people near Geneina," said Stephane Dujarric, the chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "More aid will be delivered this week."

The acting humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, Axel Bisschop, recently visited West Darfur where he met with some of the 170,000 people displaced by the fighting last month, Dujarric said. Bisschop also held talks with community leaders, the governor of West Darfur and relief organizations.

The efforts are part of the overall 1.9-billion-U.S.-dollar Humanitarian Response Plan for all Sudan, targeting 8.9 million people in need this year.

Key roads into Geneina, the regional capital of West Darfur, were blocked by protesters during the unrest until an agreement was reached on Feb. 7 with a delegation from the central government in the capital of Khartoum, allowing aid to enter, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
