BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SEOUL -- South Korea on Friday launched its mass COVID-19 vaccination nationwide, starting with patients and health workers under the age of 65 in nursing hospitals and facilities.

The free vaccination campaign began at 9:00 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) across the country. On the first day, 5,266 patients and health workers in 213 nursing facilities are scheduled to be inoculated, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland reported six new imported COVID-19 cases Thursday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 4,974.

Of the new imported cases, four were reported in Shanghai and two in Guangdong, the National Health Commission said in its daily report Friday.

SANTIAGO -- Chile's Health Ministry on Thursday reported 4,181 new COVID-19 infections and 137 more deaths, according to data collected in the last 24 hours, which brings the accumulated totals to 812,344 cases and 20,310 deaths.

Of the country's total caseload, 770,190 have recovered, while 21,383 remain active.

TUNIS -- China has decided to donate 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Tunisia, the Chinese Embassy in Tunisia announced Thursday.

"In view of the traditional and friendly relations between China and Tunisia, and in order to further support Tunisia's anti-epidemic efforts, the Chinese government has decided to provide Tunisia with 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine in the form of donation," the Chinese embassy said in a statement posted on its Facebook account.

LOS ANGELES -- The California authority reported Thursday that the United States' most populous state had 50,991 deaths from COVID-19, about one-tenth of the U.S. total from the pandemic.

The latest data released by the state government showed that 1,114 deaths were reported during the previous 24 hours. As of Thursday, a total of 3,460,326 infections were confirmed.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon registered on Thursday 3,469 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 366,302, the Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the virus went up by 52 to 4,560.

NEW YORK -- Global COVID-19 deaths surpassed 2.5 million on Thursday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

The global death toll rose to 2,501,626, with a total of more than 112.7 million cases worldwide as of 12:24 p.m. local time (1724 GMT), the CSSE data showed. Enditem
