S.Korean automakers' global car sale rises 2.3 pct in February

SEOUL, March 2 (Xinhua) -- South Korean automakers' global car sale rose last month due to strong demand both at home and abroad, industry data showed Tuesday.

The number of vehicles sold by five carmakers, including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong, was 571,079 in February, up 2.3 percent from a year earlier.

The biggest carmaker Hyundai Motor sold 300,248 vehicles in February, up 6.7 percent from a year earlier.

Hyundai's local vehicle sale jumped 32.6 percent to 52,102 units, while its overseas sale grew 2.5 percent to 248,146 units.

The global car sale by Kia Motors, affiliated with Hyundai, advanced 7 percent to 210,177 units. Kia's domestic auto sale soared 31 percent to 37,583 units, and its overseas sale rose 2.9 percent to 172,594 units.

Renault Samsung's global automotive sale expanded 4.1 percent over the year to 7,344 units in February.

GM Korea's local car sale gained 2.4 percent to 5,098 units, but its automotive export shrank 17.2 percent to 19,167 units.

Ssangyong Motor sold 2,673 vehicles at home and 116 units abroad each. Both the local and overseas sales declined in double figures last month. Enditem
