JOHANNESBURG, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The South African police on Tuesday said they arrested 10 people and recovered 973 blocks of compressed cocaine with an estimated value of R583 million (38.9 million U.S. dollars) in a boat in Western Cape.

The police said the suspects were arrested on Monday night at the Saldanha coast in a fishing vessel.

Four Bulgarian nationals and six suspects from Myanmar were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs during the late-night raid.

"The intelligence-driven evening operation saw various tactical forces descending on the vessel where 973 blocks of compressed cocaine were found in three compartments of the vessel. Ten suspects were subsequently arrested on charges of dealing in drugs. They are expected to appear in court in Vredenburg soon," said Western Cape police spokesperson Novela Potelwa.

She said they are investigating the origins and intended destination of the consignment. Enditem
