ATHENS, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Greek prominent director Stathis Livathinos resigned on Tuesday as a teacher at the Drama School of the Greek National Theater, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Livathinos' resignation came after a series of allegations made by students of bullyism during classes.

"I apologize if I may have hurt any of you. Any sternness on my part concealed nothing more than my concern so that you receive the proper tools for your future career in theatre," he wrote in the letter of resignation.

Livathinos is the second former artistic director of the National Theater to submit his resignation in the past few weeks. He served in the post of artistic director in the period 2015-2019 and remained as a teacher in the drama school.

On Feb. 6, his successor in the post, Dimitris Lignadis, resigned amidst allegations of sexual abuse of several individuals. Lignadis was arrested on Feb. 20 and is now awaiting trial, local media reported.

Greece's arts and sports world, in particular, have been rocked by the #MeToo Movement which started in Greece in mid-January this year.

The Hellenic Actors' Union submitted last week to judicial authorities a file containing over 1,000 complaints made by female and male artists in the past few weeks regarding sexual and verbal abuse.

On Tuesday, a representative of the union submitted more complaints.

Last Friday a prosecutor also ordered a preliminary inquiry into charges by 285 alumni of a chain of private schools alleging sexual and other harassment by teachers, according to AMNA.

The Greek government has repeatedly pledged that all actions will be taken to bring justice for victims in all cases and strengthen institutions to combat the phenomenon. Enditem
