Live COVID-19 updates: Ecuador sees 286,725 cases, 11,095 deaths

BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

QUITO -- Ecuador on Tuesday reported 358 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus disease and 17 more deaths from the disease in the last 24 hours, raising the total caseload to 286,725 and the death toll to 11,095.

According to the Health Ministry, 86.63 percent or 247,898 people of the total number of confirmed cases nationwide recovered from the disease.

PARIS -- French health authorities on Tuesday reported 22,857 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, sharply up from Monday's 4,703 and higher than the 20,064 daily cases registered a week ago.

The cumulative number of patients who have caught the respiratory illness rose to 3,783,528, the sixth-highest tally in the world. Coronavirus-linked fatalities were at 87,220 after 417 died within one day, including 117 in retirement homes.

TIRANA -- The Albanian government is working on creating a COVID-19 vaccine passport in case other countries impose its use as a requirement, Prime Minister Edi Rama declared on Tuesday.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on the economy, Rama said the government is working to create a COVID-19 vaccine passport for all the citizens that have received a vaccine against COVID-19 in order to facilitate their movement in case other countries impose this as a requirement.

ALGIERS -- Algeria on Tuesday reported 175 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number in the North African country to 122,430.

The death toll from the virus rose to 2,991 after four new fatalities were added, said the Algerian Ministry of Health in a statement.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon registered on Tuesday 3,098 new COVID-19 cases, raising the number of infections to 380,019, the Health Ministry reported.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the virus went up by 62 to 4,805.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia has granted conditional approval for the use of the COVID-19 vaccine made by Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The approval of the conditional registration would allow the vaccines to be used during an emergency, Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

MINSK -- Belarus reported 869 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking its total to 289,136, according to the country's health ministry.

New recoveries registered in the past 24 hours reached 788, adding to the total of 279,450, the ministry added.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 515 new COVID-19 cases and seven more deaths on Tuesday, making the tally at 547,316 and death toll at 8,423, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

The official data showed that 15,325 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across the country.

MANILA -- The Philippine military will be among the first groups in the country to get inoculated with the newly arrived Sinovac vaccines donated by China.

Lieutenant Gen. Jose Faustino, the commanding general of the Philippine Army, received the first dose of the Sinovac vaccine CoronaVac during a ceremonial vaccination at army headquarters on Tuesday.

TBILISI -- Georgia on Tuesday reported 461 new COVID-19 cases, taking its total to 271,379, according to the country's National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC).

The NCDC data showed that 163 more patients recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 265,686.

Meanwhile, 12 people died in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 3,532.

HONG KONG -- China's Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 13 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking its total tally to 11,032.

The new cases included seven local infections, of which four had unknown origins, and there were also more than 10 preliminary cases, according to the CHP. It was the third straight day for Hong Kong's untraceable local infections to remain at a single digit. Enditem
