TASHKENT, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan brought home 24 people, mostly women and children, from its war-torn neighbor Afghanistan under the state program Mercy, the southern Surkhandarya region's police department reported Wednesday.

They were met at the Uzbek-Afghan border by local authorities and law enforcement bodies, and were placed in a health center in the city of Termez, southern Uzbekistan, the report said.

In recent years, Uzbekistan's government has carried out several operations within the Mercy program to return its citizens who had left their homeland after being influenced by international terrorist organizations operating in the Middle East and other countries, it added.

Last December, the Central Asian nation repatriated 25 women and 73 children from the refugee camps in Syria with a special flight organized at the request of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Enditem
