HARARE, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) announced Thursday that 24 low contact sporting activities can now resume following the easing of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions by the government this week.

The sporting activities, however, exclude soccer.

The government on Monday lifted major lockdown restrictions that had been in place since January, following a significant decrease in new COVID-19 infections and deaths.

As the restrictions were relaxed, the government allowed social gatherings of up to 50 people to resume.

The SRC said sporting activities such as archery, cricket, chess, draft, table tennis, cycling, rolling, polo, shooting and swimming can now resume.

Tennis, horse racing, badminton, lawn bowls, triathlon, wood ball, motorsports, rowing, archery, angling, shooting and equestrian were also given the green light.

The SRC said sports associations that are allowed to resume activities must follow their previously approved COVID-19 protocols, taking into account the national and World Health Organization guidelines.

The organization added that bars and changing rooms at sporting facilities should remain closed while restaurants are only allowed to open for takeaways.

Zimbabwe has had a number of its soccer players, including those playing for the national team, getting infected with coronavirus after participating in tournaments.

Zimbabwe has to date recorded 36,179 cases of COVID-19 which have resulted in 1,478 deaths. Enditem
