RIGA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- The Latvian government on Friday ordered all office employees to switch to work from home as part of a new set of safety measures that are being introduced in preparation for a possible third wave of COVID-19 infections.

As of next Tuesday (March 16), only those employees whose jobs cannot be done remotely will be allowed to go to work in person, while all others will be working from home. Employers will identify those employees whose presence at the workplace is indispensable and appoint a person in charge of compliance with COVID-19 rules at the workplace.

The requirement to work from home will apply to both public and private sector employees, but not to people working in sectors like industrial or agricultural production where remote work is impossible.

Other measures adopted at Friday's extraordinary government meeting include increased police controls on public transport to ensure that passenger load does not exceed 50 percent of the transport vehicle's capacity.

In municipalities where the cumulative 14-day COVID-19 incidence does not exceed 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, schools will be allowed to hold up to seven classes per week in outdoor settings like parks or stadiums for groups of up to 20 students. Enditem
