MEXICO CITY, March 13 (Xinhua) -- A first-half goal from Mexico international midfielder Roberto Alvarado fired leaders Cruz Azul to a 1-0 home win over Monterrey on Saturday, their ninth straight Liga MX victory.
Alvarado put the hosts ahead on the stroke of halftime with a first-time finish from close range after an Ignacio Rivero cross from the left side of the penalty area.
It was Cruz Azul's fourth successive 1-0 victory in Mexico's top flight as they extended their winning sequence to nine straight matches.
After losing their first two matches of the campaign, Cruz Azul are now five points clear at the top of the 18-team Liga MX Clausura standings. Monterrey dropped to fourth, eight points off the pace.
In other matches on Saturday, Mazatlan won 2-1 at Tigres UANL and Santos Laguna prevailed 1-0 at Club Tijuana. Enditem
