RIGA -- Latvia has temporarily halted the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19, health officials informed on Tuesday.

The Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), the State Immunization Council, the State Agency of Medicines of the Republic of Latvia (SAM) and the Health Inspectorate recommended the suspension of the AstraZeneca vaccine after several other countries took similar measures over fears that the jab might cause thrombosis.

The decision has been taken based on reports from some European Union member states that a small number of recipients developed blood clots after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, said the SAM. (Latvia-AstraZeneca-Covid-19) Enditem
