BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Brunei will re-launch the National Basketball League on April 16, 2021, after a one-year standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Brunei Basketball Association (BBA), this year's National Basketball League will be participated by district teams and invited teams to make the games more competitive on Tuesday.

The BBA said that the National Basketball League would feature both men's and women's categories. The men's category is open to Brunei citizens and permanent residents only.

Amid rising concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, Brunei canceled all official football and basketball matches last March. As the pandemic is currently under control and the last local infection case was reported over 300 days ago, Brunei announced a further reduction of social distancing measures and the implementation of New Normal for major social activities, including mass gathering and sports games from March 8, 2021.

To further strengthen BBA's focus on developing Brunei basketball's future, the BBA requires each participating team in the men's category to have at least five under 23.

"This is to ensure younger players have the opportunity to play competitive basketball under the guidance of more experienced players and coaches," the BBA said. Enditem
