ATHENS, March 20 (Xinhua) -- A demonstration against racism and fascism was held in the center of Athens on Saturday ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is observed annually on March 21.

Demonstrators along with representatives of labor and student unions marched in the streets, chanting slogans for respect, equality and an end to discrimination and hate.

"This rally is an answer to racism and fascist threat. We don't want a world with fences," Petros Konstantinou, director of the local anti-fascist group Keerfa, told Xinhua.

"We are here to join our forces with all those demonstrating around the world, as well in other Greek cities. We join our forces to fight and win," said Kostas Papadakis, the civil attorney representing four Egyptian fishermen who were brutally attacked by a group of Golden Dawn party members in 2012.

The leaders and dozens of members of the Greek far-right Golden Dawn party were found guilty last year of operating the party as a criminal organization and were imprisoned for the murder of an anti-fascist activist as well as many attacks against foreigners and political opponents.

The chapter of Golden Dawn, which was represented in parliament in the period 2012-2019, closed for Greece, but the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated problems for vulnerable groups, demonstrators said on Saturday. Enditem
