ISLAMABAD, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The 81st Pakistan Day was celebrated in the country on Tuesday with traditional zeal and fervor.

The Pakistan Day, also known as the Pakistan Resolution Day or Republic Day, is celebrated annually on March 23 to mark the passing of the Lahore Resolution on March 23, 1940, which is a major milestone in the subcontinent's Muslim struggle for an independent state.

Pakistani President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan in their separate messages on the occasion pledged to make Pakistan a humane, progressive and prosperous country and urged the people to support the government's efforts to make the country a welfare state.

The day dawned with 31-gun salute in the capital of Islamabad and 21-gun salute in provincial capitals, according to the Pakistani army.

Meanwhile, the military parade, the main feature of the day, was postponed due to heavy rains in the capital and is scheduled to be held on Thursday, an army statement said.

The national flag was hoisted high on major government and private buildings across the country. Rallies and seminars were held in major cities where speakers highlighted the role of the Lahore Resolution in the creation of Pakistan.

An investiture ceremony was held at the president's house wherein Alvi conferred awards and medals to personalities for their outstanding contributions in different fields.

In view of the third wave of COVID-19, all events in connection with the day were held in compliance with the standard operating procedures. Enditem
