JERUSALEM, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Israeli army said it struck military targets in the Gaza Strip early on Wednesday after a rocket from Gaza hit southern Israel a day earlier.

During the overnight assault, war jets and attack helicopters struck a rocket manufacturing site and a military post belonging to Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian group that runs Gaza, according to a statement issued by the military.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the assault.

The attack was "a response to the rocket fired from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory," the statement read.

The rocket fell in the area of Beersheba, Israel's largest southern city, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was on a campaign tour in the city, according to the Hebrew-language Ha'aretz newspaper. No injuries or damage were reported.

No group claimed responsibility for the incident, but the army warned that it held Hamas "responsible for all events transpiring in the Gaza Strip and emanating from it, and will bear the consequences for terror activity against Israeli civilians."

Militants in the Palestinian enclave occasionally hit southern Israel and the Israeli army retaliates with airstrikes.

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since 2007. Enditem
