SANTIAGO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Chile registered 7,626 new COVID-19 infections in one day, the highest number ever, surpassing the record for the second time this month and bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 962,321, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

According to the ministry's report, another 63 deaths were registered in the same period, for a death toll of 22,587.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases reported on Friday is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic in the country in March 2020, surpassing the 7,084 infections reported last Saturday, as well as the peaks of the first wave of infections in June 2020.

As a result of the critical health situation in Chile, almost 16 million people will go into quarantine starting on Saturday, including the entire Santiago Metropolitan Region. Enditem
