CONAKRY, March 30 (Xinhua) -- An unlicensed fishing pirogue sank off Guinean coasts early Monday morning, leading to 14 deaths, one person missing and 15 persons injured, an official press release said on Monday.

According to the Guinean government, the tragedy occurred around 7 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) in the administrative region of Boke on Monday, located more than 300 km northwest of the capital Conakry.

The fishing pirogue with passengers on board was sailing in the dark and without any safety and security measures, the government said.

The provisional toll established by the Guinean government is 14 deaths, one missing and 15 injured, with the injured currently being cared for, the government said in the statement.

The government also announced the opening of an investigation by competent services to find out the causes and circumstances of the tragedy.

With more than 300 km of sea coast, Guinea often sees accidents at sea with the capsizing of fishing pirogues, often due to overloading, bad weather conditions and above all, illegal transportation operations at night. Enditem
