LUSAKA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A Zambian registered airline said on Tuesday that it plans to start operating direct flights to South Africa.

Proflight Zambia said it will commence direct flights to connect Zambia's tourist capital, Livingstone to South Africa's city Johannesburg as part of efforts to tap into that country's tourists.

In a statement, the airline said it has received approval for the new route which will be introduced in a phased approach starting next month.

"We are extremely proud to be the first ones in Zambia to be offering this connection after South Africa begins relaxing COVID-19 travel restrictions," Josias Walubita, the airline's Director Flight Operations said.

The airline, he said, has already put in place strict guidelines to ensure passengers and staff were protected from COVID-19, adding that the new route would facilitate tourism and trade between the two countries.

Currently, the airline operates daily flights between Lusaka, the country's capital and Johannesburg. Enditem
