Ukraine raises retirement age for women to 60 years old

KIEV, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian government has raised the age of retirement for women to 60 years old since April 1 this year.
The change was due to the law on raising the retirement age for women from 55 to 60 years old, which was passed by the Ukrainian Parliament in 2011.
Now in Ukraine men and women retire at the same age.
The Ukrainian authorities explained that the increase in the retirement age for women was to mitigate the negative consequences of the aging population, and reduce the deficit of the Pension Fund of Ukraine, which at the end of 2020 reached 13.2 billion hryvnia (474.5 million U.S. dollars).
According to the State Statistic Service of Ukraine, the majority of its population are women, who account for 22.4 million, while 19.3 million are men.
The working-age population in Ukraine (aged over 15 years old) in 2020 were 17.67 million, with 47.6 percent of them being women.
As of January this year, 8.3 million people in Ukraine received the state pension with a minimum monthly payment of 1,769 hryvnia (64 dollars) and at an average of 3,507 hryvnia (126 dollars). Enditem
