BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will hold a summit meeting on the ongoing developments in Myanmar, Bruneian and Malaysian leaders said here on Monday.

As the current chair country of ASEAN, Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah held bilateral talks with Muhyiddin Yassin, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, who is paying his first official visit to Brunei on April 4-5. (Brunei-Malaysia-ASEAN summit)

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Monday said that COVID-19 cases are surging in two western prefectures, including Osaka, but the situation does not mean the country is entering the fourth wave of infections.

TOKYO -- Stricter measures came into effect on Monday for three Japanese prefectures in an effort to combat a resurgence of COVID-19 cases under a revised law that does not require declaring a state of emergency.

The tougher measures effective for one month until May 5, cover Osaka, Hyogo and Miyagi prefectures, with prefectural authorities requesting restaurants and bars to shorten their opening hours and close by 8:00 p.m. and customers asked to wear masks while conversing. (Japan-Restrictions)

HANOI -- The 14th National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam on Monday afternoon elected Pham Minh Chinh as the country's new prime minister.

A resolution was adopted by the top legislature with an approval rate of 96.25 percent to elect Chinh as the new prime minister of the country at the ongoing 11th session of the 14th NA, Vietnam News Agency reported. (Vietnam-PM) Enditem
