VALLETTA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Malta will reopen its embassy and consulate in Tripoli, capital city of Libya, and will resume flights to Libya, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Monday.

In a lightning visit to Tripoli to meet Libyan interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, Abela said Malta will also use diplomatic avenues to help Libya procure the COVID-19 vaccine as it wanted to help the African country return to normality after the pandemic, the government said in a statement.

It said the two prime ministers discussed themes of common interest, including the economy, security and migration. Malta is the latest European Union member seeking to improve ties with Tripoli.

Abela said that peace and prosperity in Libya are in everyone's interest and the international community should help the country in its rebuilding effort.

During his visit, accompanied by Maltese Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Minister of Finance and Employment Clyde Caruana, Abela also met Libyan President Mohammad Younes Menfi.

"Libya living in prosperity and peace also means that the Mediterranean and Europe will live in prosperity," said Abela, adding that the Maltese government believes that the international community should help and does not interfere in the process of rebuilding Libya.

The visit by Abela came a day after European Council President Charles Michel was in Tripoli, offering EU support for the latest bid to end the chaos in the country. Enditem
