Roundup: Iran reports nearly 14,000 new COVID-19 infections; Iraq's caseload approaches 880,000

CAIRO, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran's health ministry on Monday reported 13,890 new COVID-19 cases amid the spread of the mutated strain, raising the caseload to 1,945,964. Meanwhile, Iraq registered 6,423 new coronavirus cases, raising the total nationwide infections to 879,991.

Earlier in the day, the Iranian health minister announced that cities expect the resurgence of one of the "most terrible" COVID-19 waves.

The pandemic has so far claimed 63,332 lives in Iran, up by 172 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

A total of 1,658,978 people have recovered from the disease and been discharged from hospitals, while 4,095 remain in intensive care units, she noted.

The Iraqi Ministry of Health on Monday reported 39 new deaths, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 14,502, while the total recoveries in the country climbed by 5,664 to 784,199.

Turkey on Monday reported 42,551 new coronavirus cases. Among the new cases, 1,706 are symptomatic patients, and the tally of infections in the country reached 3,529,601, according to the country's health ministry.

The death toll from the virus in Turkey rose by 193 to 32,456, while the total recoveries climbed to 3,130,977.

In Kuwait, the health ministry reported on Monday 1,357 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections in the country to 238,549.

It also announced 12 more fatalities, taking the death toll to 1,365, while the tally of recoveries rose by 1,326 to 223,269. A total of 13,915 coronavirus patients are receiving treatment, including 216 in the intensive care units.

The Omani Health Ministry on Monday announced 1,117 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Sultanate to 164,274.

Meanwhile, 862 people recovered during the past 24 hours, taking the overall recoveries to 147,539 while 10 deaths were reported, pushing the tally up to 1,722, according to a ministry statement.

Oman will allow only citizens and residents to enter its territory starting from Thursday amid a growing number of COVID-19 cases which is pressuring the health care system, the Gulf state's coronavirus committee said on Monday.

"The committee also extended an evening ban on all commercial activities until the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, scheduled to start in mid-April," a committee statement said.

Lebanon registered on Monday 1,001 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 480,502 in the country, the Health Ministry reported.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the virus went up by 34 to 6,443 in Lebanon.

Israel's Ministry of Health reported 353 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, raising the total infections in the country to 834,563.

The death toll from the virus rose by two to 6,245, while the total recoveries in Israel rose to 823,280 with 665 newly recovered cases being added.

The number of people vaccinated against COVID-19 in Israel surpassed 5.27 million, or 56.7 percent of its total population, after the vaccination campaign began on Dec. 20, 2020.

In Qatar, the health ministry on Monday announced 910 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total confirmed number in the Gulf state to 184,334.

Meanwhile, 489 more recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 166,441, while the death toll increased by three to 306, according to a ministry statement.

Algeria on Monday reported 117 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total confirmed number in the North African country to 117,622.

The death toll from the virus rose to 3,105 after three new fatalities were added, while 98 more patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 81,896, said the Algerian Ministry of Health in a statement. Enditem
