VIENTIANE, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith has said he will work closely with Vietnam's newly-elected President Nguyen Xuan Phuc to boost the cooperative relations and solidarity between their two countries to a higher level.

Thongloun made the remark in a telephone conversation held with his Vietnamese counterpart following the latter's election by Vietnam's National Assembly on Monday, the state-run daily Vientiane Times reported on Wednesday.

The Lao president congratulated Phuc on his election, and said he believed that under Phuc's leadership Vietnam would further develop substantially, and thus enhance its role in the regional and international arenas.

Thongloun also said he believed that under Phuc's leadership, the cooperative relations, friendship and special solidarity between Laos and Vietnam would continue to deepen and be fruitful.

In their phone conversation, the two presidents spoke highly of the past bilateral cooperation, according to the Lao Foreign Ministry.

The two presidents agreed to further boost the exchange of visits by high-level delegations as well as continue to push the implementation of agreements signed by top leaders of the two countries.

Thongloun invited the Vietnamese president to visit Laos at an appropriate date.

Vietnam is the third largest foreign investor in Laos after China and Thailand. As of December 2020, Vietnam's investments in Laos totaled 4.1 billion U.S. dollars. Vietnam is also a key trading partner of Laos, according to the Vientiane Times report. Enditem
