MADRID, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Athletic Club Bilbao's San Mames Stadium could have fans in the stands for the four matches due to be played there in this summer's European Championships, it was reported on Wednesday.

The local authority in Bilbao has confirmed that if certain sanitary conditions are met, the ground will be able to operate at 25 percent capacity to host around 13,000 fans for three matches in Group E. These games see Spain face Sweden on June 14, before facing Poland on June 19 and Slovakia four days later. The ground is also the venue for a game in the last 16 on June 27.

However, the conditions are strict and it is by no means certain they will be met over the next two months.

Among the requirements are that the accumulated incidence of COVID-19 in the Basque region of northern Spain is below 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, although it currently stands at 272 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and is expected to rise further in the coming days as a result of the Easter holidays.

Another requirement is for 60 percent of the population in the Basque region to be vaccinated against the virus, when only 5.5 percent have been protected so far. Meanwhile no more than eight percent of all hospital beds and no more than two percent of intensive care beds can be occupied by COVID patients, with the current occupation rates standing at 11.51 percent and 21.53 percent.
