Live COVID-19 updates: Brazil tops 340,000 total deaths

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil reported on Wednesday 3,829 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing its total to 340,776, said the Ministry of Health.

The ministry said that there were also 92,625 new COVID-19 infections in the same period of time, for an accumulated total of 13,193,205.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina registered 22,039 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, the highest number recorded in a single day since March of last year, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2,450,068, according to the Ministry of Health.

The South American country also reported 199 new deaths, bringing the total number to 56,832, the ministry said.

ANKARA -- Turkey on Wednesday reported its largest single-day increase in infections with 54,740 new COVID-19 cases, according to its health ministry.

Among the new cases are 2,203 symptomatic patients, and the caseload in the country has reached 3,633,925.

SANTIAGO -- The Chilean Health Ministry reported on Wednesday 5,134 new COVID-19 infections and 62 more deaths in one day, bringing the total number of cases to 1,043,022, and the total deaths to 23,796.

In the last 14 days, COVID-19 cases have increased by 20 percent nationwide, according to ministry data, while only six of the nation's 13 regions have seen a decrease in infections in the last two weeks, amid a resurgence that has nearly overwhelmed the hospital system.

HAVANA -- Cuba reported on Wednesday 961 COVID-19 infections in one day, a slight decrease after eight consecutive days of over 1,000 cases, bringing the total to 82,601, along with two more deaths, for a total of 442, the Ministry of Public Health said.

Of the total number of cases registered, 952 were from community transmission, confirming that local transmission in the country has predominated in the past two and a half months, the ministry's national director of hygiene and epidemiology Francisco Duran reported.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday 8,331 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily count since the outbreak of the pandemic, raising the total infections to 895,622.

It also said 37 new deaths were recorded during the day, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 14,572, while the total recoveries in Iraq climbed by 5,020 to 794,444. Enditem
