MONTEVIDEO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Former Atletico Madrid winger Cristian Rodriguez has parted ways with Penarol as the Uruguayan giants revamp their squad for the 2021 season.

The 35-year-old is the seventh first-team player to leave the Montevideo club in 2021, following the departures of Robert Herrera, Matias Britos, Fabian Estoyanoff, Marcel Novick, Juan Acosta and Giovanni Gonzalez.

"Our special thanks go to a fan who became a part of the club, had an extensive and brilliant career abroad and then returned in full force to defend these colors [again]," Penarol said on Twitter.

Rodriguez made his professional debut for Penarol as a teenager before representing Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Porto, Atletico Madrid, Parma, Gremio and Independiente.

He returned to Penarol in 2017, scoring 31 goals in 98 appearances in his second spell at the club.

"I want to thank everybody at Penarol and those that have always been there for me. Thank you for the love and respect," the forward said.

Capped 110 times for Uruguay's national team, Rodriguez was part of the Celeste squad that reached the semifinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Uruguay's 2021 domestic football season is scheduled to begin on April 24. Enditem
