ZAGREB, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of new daily COVID-19 infections registered in Croatia on Thursday was 3,217, the highest since last December, the national civil protection team said.

More than 11,000 people have been tested and 28 percent of them turned out to be positive.

Croatia is in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic and the government here is revising its measures. The country's education minister said on Thursday that schools in the capital Zagreb will remain closed next week and teaching will continue remotely. Home schooling will start in some other counties as well.

"It is important for people to understand that out of 45 infected people one person will die in the coming weeks," Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Thursday. He noted that by June 30 Croatia will have around 2.5 million vaccine doses, which is fewer than planned but enough to inoculate more than half of the adult population. To date, Croatia has received 657,385 doses of different vaccines and administered 81 percent of them.

Croatia has a population of over four million.

Since Feb. 25, 2020, when Croatia registered its first COVID-19 case, a total of 285,765 people have been infected and 6,185 of them have died. Enditem
