Live COVID-19 updates: Chile, Argentina see record daily cases

BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SANTIAGO -- Chile reported 8,195 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest daily count since the outbreak, taking the national tally to 1,051,270.

It was the third time that more than 8,000 news cases had been reported nationwide on a single day. With 183 deaths being reported in the last 24 hours, the national death toll amounted to 23,979.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina on Thursday reported 23,683 new COVID-19 cases of the past 24 hours, a record daily count since the outbreak of the virus, the Ministry of Health said.

A total of 2,473,751 people in Argentina have been tested positive, the ministry said, adding that 290 more people died of the disease nationwide, raising the national death toll to 57,122.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland on Thursday reported eight new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases in Yunnan Province, the National Health Commission said Friday.

The same day also saw 13 new imported cases on the mainland, the commission said in its daily report.

RABAT -- Morocco on Thursday received the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines through the global vaccine-sharing facility COVAX, the Ministry of Health said.

Additional doses will be allocated to the country in the coming weeks, said the ministry in a statement, without giving further details about the vaccine Morocco received under this program.

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said that members of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation should push back against vaccine nationalism and undue export restrictions to let COVID-19 vaccine reach equally to all countries of the world.

Addressing the 10th D-8 Summit, hosted in virtual format on Thursday, Khan said the D-8 should call for COVID-19 vaccine to be treated as a global public good, ensure equity, affordability, enhanced production and timely supply to save lives, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 671 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 108,269.

The daily caseload was down from 700 in the previous day, but it stayed above 600 for the third straight day. Enditem
