Nepal reports increase of 107 one-horned rhinos in 6 years

KATHMANDU, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Despite a large number of deaths, the population of one-horned rhinoceros in Nepal has increased by 107 during the past six years, according to the latest survey.
The result of the sixth census of the endangered species released on Saturday showed Nepal is home to 752 rhinos, an increase from 645 in the last counting in 2015.
"There has been a satisfactory rise in the numbers of rhinos," Hari Bhandra Acharya, spokesperson at the Department of National Parks and WildLife Conservation, told Xinhua.
The country now has 752 rhinos, including 136 calves.
As many as 161 rhinos were killed since the last census among which six were killed by poachers.
The census, which is done every five years, was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The counting, which started on March 22 from Chitwan National Park and Parsa National Park, was later expanded to Bardiya National Park and Shuklaphanta National Park.
