Live COVID-19 updates: Africa's cases pass 4.34 mln

BEIJING, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,340,817 as of Sunday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union (AU), said the death toll from the pandemic stood at 115,418 while 3,897,927 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

KABUL -- A total of 82 new COVID-19 cases were registered in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of the cases in the country to 57,242, the Public Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The statement said that eight patients died over the period, bringing the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 2,529 since the outbreak of the disease in February 2020 in the country.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh on Sunday reported 78 more deaths from COVID-19, the highest single-day number, bringing the death toll to nearly 10,000.

According to its Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 9,739 patients have died in Bangladesh from the epidemic since it hit the Asian country.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 8,702 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 4,641,390, the official monitoring and response center said Sunday.

The national COVID-19 death toll rose by 337 to 102,986 in the past day, while the number of recoveries grew by 7,230 to 4,265,509. Enditem
