PHNOM PENH, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Monday logged 277 new COVID-19 cases and one more death in the last 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

Of the new cases, 204 are in capital Phnom Penh, 43 in Svay Rieng province, 23 in Kandal province, three in Pursat province, two in Prey Veng province, and one each in Preah Sihanouk and Takeo provinces, the statement said.

The new deceased patient was identified as a 61-year-old woman residing in Phnom Penh, the statement said, adding that she was confirmed to have the virus on March 30, and had a history of diabetes.

In the latest move, local authorities have temporarily closed down the popular Phsar Chas (Old Market) in Phnom Penh's Daun Penh district after vendors tested positive for the virus.

Health Ministry's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine on Monday called on people to stay home during the upcoming Khmer New Year from April 14-16 in order to help curb the virus spread.

"Now, we don't know who have and who don't have the COVID-19, so please stay where you are and celebrate the New Year with your family members only in order to contain the virus spread and to prevent yourselves from getting infected," she told reporters.

According to the MoH, since the start of the pandemic in January last year, the Southeast Asian country has officially registered a total of 4,515 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 30 deaths and 2,212 recoveries. Enditem
