MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported on Monday 11,378 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 876,225.

The death toll climbed to 15,149 after 204 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said. There are now 157,451 active cases in the country, the DOH added. (Philippines-COVID-19 cases)

NEW DELHI -- With 904 deaths in the past 24 hours, India's total death toll due to the COVID-19 pandemic surpassed the 170,000 mark to reach 170,179, according to the latest data released by the federal government Monday.

Besides, 168,912 new cases took the total tally to 13,527,717. While the figure of new daily COVID-19 cases is highest ever in the country so far, the deaths reported on Monday is the highest in a single day this year. (India-COVID-19 tally)

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan -- A senior military doctor and an army officer were killed in a shooting in Afghanistan's northern Balkh province on Monday, the latest in a string of targeted killings in the conflict-torn country, local police confirmed.

"Dr. Mohammad Samim and an army officer were martyred when gunmen fired on an army's four-wheel-drive vehicle in Kart-e-Ferdowsi in Police District 5 of provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif city during morning rush hour," Adil Shah Adil, provincial police spokesman, told Xinhua. CANBERRA -- Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has conceded that Australians might not all receive coronavirus vaccines in 2021.
