TOKYO -- Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa prefectures on Monday implemented new stricter measures to combat a COVID-19 resurgence just weeks after a state of emergency was fully lifted for the nation.

For Kyoto and Okinawa, the stricter measures, including requesting bars and restaurants to shorten their opening hours and limiting attendance at large-scale spectator events at 5,000 people, will remain in place until May 5.

For Tokyo, the epicenter of the pandemic in Japan since its outbreak here, will see the tougher measures last through May 11. (Japan-COVID-19-Restrictions)

DHAKA -- Bangladesh on Monday reported 83 more deaths from COVID-19, the highest daily figure, bringing the death toll to 9,822.

The country's Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) also reported 7,201 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, raising its total tally to 691,957. (Bangladesh-COVID-19)

SEOUL -- South Korea on Monday expressed its serious concern about Japan's alleged decision to release radioactive wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement that the Japanese government is known to be scheduled to hold a meeting on Tuesday to decide on its plan of discharging the nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima power plant into the Pacific Ocean. (S. Korea-Japan-Radioactive Wastewater)

SYDNEY -- The Solomon Islands has received a batch of the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines, which is the first among Pacific island countries to get the COVID-19 vaccine from China through bilateral channels, reports reaching here said.

A handover ceremony was held on Monday at the Solomon Islands prime minister's official residence. Chinese Ambassador to the Solomon Islands Li Ming and Solomon Islands Health Minister Culwick Togamana signed the vaccine handover document at the ceremony, witnessed by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.
