CHICAGO, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The city of Detroit in the U.S. state of Michigan has launched a weeklong drive through Friday to put vaccine clinics closer to residents in their neighborhoods in an effort to deal with residents' vaccine hesitancy.

About 1 in 5, or 21 percent of Detroiters have received at least one shot, the Detroit News quoted the city's vaccine dashboard on Monday.

The drive came as Michigan is on track to see a greater surge in COVID-19 cases than the spike in fall 2020.

Statewide, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched vaccination partnership with universities and colleges, and expanded mobile vaccination sites with community partners in neighborhoods.

Michigan has asked the Federal Government for more vaccines last week, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer renewed the appeal to the Federal Government on Sunday.

New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey together reported 44 percent of the country's new COVID-19 infections, or nearly 197,500 new cases, in the latest seven-day period, according to state health agency data compiled by Johns Hopkins University on April 6. Total U.S. infections during the same seven days numbered more than 452,000. For Michigan, the average daily report of new COVID-19 cases has risen sevenfold since a low point in February. Enditem
