Live COVID-19 updates: India sees new record of 184,372 daily cases

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- A record number of 184,372 new COVID-19 cases, and 1,027 deaths due to the pandemic were registered across India in the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry on Wednesday.

The new figures took the total tally to 13,873,825 and the total death toll to 172,085.

ULAN BATOR -- Mongolia reported 1,220 new COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour span, a new record and the first time with more than 1,000 daily cases, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases said Wednesday.

A total of 10,827 tests have been conducted in the last 24 hours across Mongolia, and 10 of the latest confirmed cases were imported, the center said in a statement.

WASHINGTON -- The United States has seen an upward trend in COVID-19 cases for four consecutive weeks, as social distancing and mask mandates were lifted in some areas and more variants transmitted across the country.

Since March 20, the 7-day moving average of new COVID-19 cases in the country has consistently remained higher compared with the previous 7-day moving average, according to data of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

ADDIS ABABA -- Ethiopia registered 1,568 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the national count to 232,512 as of Tuesday evening, said the Ethiopian Health Ministry.

During the period, 22 new COVID-19-related deaths were reported across the country, bringing the national tally to 3,230, said the ministry.

BANGKOK -- Thailand on Wednesday reported 1,335 new COVID-19 cases, the biggest daily increase since the pandemic began, taking the total caseload to 35,910, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

A total of 1,326 of the new infections were domestic transmissions, with 789 being confirmed via tests at medical facilities and 537 via proactive tests, while nine others were imported cases, according to the CCSA.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentine Health Minister Carla Vizzotti on Tuesday highlighted the efficacy of the vaccine against COVID-19 developed by Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinopharm.

The Sinopharm vaccine being applied by Argentina has an efficacy similar to the AstraZeneca vaccine and many other vaccines, "which is almost 80 percent," Vizzotti told reporters.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil on Tuesday reported 3,808 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, raising its pandemic death toll to 358,425.

According to the Ministry of Health, during the same period, tests detected 82,186 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections to 13,599,994. Enditem
