Live COVID-19 updates: Iran reports 25,261 new COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh recorded a total of 101 deaths from COVID-19 on Friday, according to the country's Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

It is the first time that more than 100 daily deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the country, bringing the death toll to 10,182.

TEHRAN -- The Iranian Health Ministry reported 25,261 new COVID-19 infections and 328 more deaths on Friday, taking the nationwide caseload to 2,194,133 and death toll to 66,008.

According to the daily report of Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education on its official website, 1,761,497 COVID-19 patients have recovered or been discharged from Iranian hospitals as of Friday, and 4,652 others are currently being treated in intensive care units.

GENEVA -- The COVID-19 variant that emerged in India, the B.1.617, could bring about "increased transmissibility" or even "reduced neutralization" due to the specific mutations that it contains, an official of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

The variant B.1.617 which first appeared in India on Dec. 7, 2020, according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (INSACOG), has two specific mutations -- E484Q and L452R -- that have been detected in more contagious variants worldwide, said Maria Van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 Technical Lead at WHO, at a press conference here.

BANGKOK -- Thailand reported 1,582 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the highest number in a day since the pandemic began, rising for the third consecutive day, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The latest wave of infections in the Southeast Asian country brought the country's total caseload to 39,038, with 97 fatalities.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 2,551 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Friday, bringing the national total to 370,528.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 29 of the new cases are imported and with 2,522 being local transmissions.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 8,995 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 4,684,148, the official monitoring and response center said Friday.

The national COVID-19 death toll rose by 397 to 104,795 in the past day, while the number of the country's recoveries grew by 9,109 to 4,310,557. Enditem
