BERLIN, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Jamal Musiala's brace helped front runners Bayern Munich extend their lead atop the Bundesliga standings after edging a resilient Wolfsburg 3-2 on the road on Saturday.

Bayern took advantage of Leipzig's draw with Hoffenheim on Friday, as Hansi Flick's men eye a ninth consecutive Bundesliga title after moving seven points clear with five rounds to spare.

Wolfsburg started brightly on home soil though, as Ridle Baku tested Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with only five minutes played.

However, the opener was scored at the other end of the pitch as Musiala danced through Wolfsburg's box before slotting home past custodian Koen Casteels moments later.

The Bavarians gained momentum and made it two after 24 minutes when Casteels fumbled a cross into the path of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who made no mistake to poke home from very close range.

Leroy Sane had another chance at the half-hour mark but the German international missed the target from the edge of the penalty box.

The Wolves suddenly sparked to life after Wout Weghorst benefitted from a misplaced pass from Thomas Muller to halve the deficit out of the blue in the 35th minute.

The joy did not last too long for Wolfsburg as Bayern's youngster Musiala restored the visitor's two-goal lead after heading home Muller's pinpoint cross with 38 minutes gone.

Bayern should have extended its lead before halftime but both Muller and Musiala lacked accuracy in front of the target.

After the restart, Wolfsburg once again grabbed the better start and was even able to reduce the arrears as Maximilian Philipp tapped home a cross at the near post in the 54th minute.

Wolfsburg gained the upper hand but Bayern's Sane wasted another opportunity from a promising position.

Weghorst had the equalizer on his foot but the Dutchman's shot was neutralized by Neuer with a diving save at the hour mark.

Wolfsburg's best chance came in the closing stages when Jerome Roussillon had only Neuer to beat but instead the defender missed the goal.

With the result, Bayern opens up a seven-point advantage atop the table meanwhile third-placed Wolfsburg suffered its second straight defeat.

"It a disappointing outcome for us. In the second half we were the better team. I think we should have earned a point today," said Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.

Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach eased 4-0 past fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt by courtesy of three second-half goals.

Freiburg's Christian Gunter provided a brace to sink bottom side Schalke 4-0 on home soil.

Union Berlin overpowered Stuttgart 2-1 and Augsburg played out a goalless draw with relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld. Enditem
