BAGHDAD, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Five rockets on Sunday struck an Iraqi military air base in Iraq's Salahudin province north of capital Baghdad, wounding two security members, the Iraqi military said.

A statement by the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said that the rockets were fired from al-Dojama, an area located across the Tigris River in the neighboring Diyala province, and landed on the Balad Air Base, some 90 km north of Baghdad.

As a result of the attack, two members of an Iraqi force tasked with protecting the base were wounded, the JOC statement said.

"These heinous acts targeting our military installations will face a firm response," the JOC said, warning that such attack "is considered a terrorist act."

Earlier, Mohammed al-Bazi, from Salahudin provincial police, told Xinhua that at least four Katyusha rockets hit the Balad base at sunset, and three of the rockets landed inside the air base without knowing the casualties.

Balad, which houses Iraqi F-16 fighters and some U.S. experts and advisers for the jets, is the largest military air base in Iraq. The U.S. troops withdrew more than a year ago after the base came under a series of rocket attacks by unidentified militias. Enditem
