BRATISLAVA, April 18 (Xinhua) -- In the 27th round of the Slovak football premiership Fortuna Liga, SK Slovan Bratislava could have sealed the championship title under two conditions - defeat of traditional rival FC Spartak Trnava and second-placed FC DAC 1904 Dunajska Streda lost to AS Trencin over the weekend.

But neither of those requirements were met as Bratislava lost to Trnava 2-1 and Dunajska Streda edged out Trencin 2-0.

The 159th duel between Bratislava and Trnava saw Trnava put an end to several negative streaks at once. It took more than two and a half years for the visitors to score against their arch-rival and five long years to win on their turf. After the 2-1 victory, they also snapped their eight-game streak without a win against Slovan.

Lady Luck was on Trnava's side for a change as Slovan's Bulgarian defenseman Vasil Bozhikov opened the score with an own goal in the 12th minute trying to clear a set-piece play. Twenty minutes into the second half, Trnava's Greek midfielder Kyriakos Savvidis stretched the lead to 2-0 from another free-kick. The home team managed to cut the deficit to one late in the game on a penalty kick.

FC DAC 1904 Dunajska Streda kept its slim championship hopes alive by defeating Trencin 2-0. Only 8 minutes into the match, Dunajska Streda's Venezuelan striker and Fortuna Liga's top-scorer Eric Ramirez launched a beautiful curved shot from way off that found its way around Trencin's goalkeeper. Thirteen minutes later, his Croatian teammate Marko Divkovic stretched the lead to 2-0 on a free-kick header, serving sixth-ranked Trencin a fifth consecutive defeat.

MSK Zilina was forced to give up its favorable third spot in the rankings to Trnava after an unconvincing performance at Zlate Moravce. The match was heading for a goalless draw but the home team's attack down the right wing resulted in a cross that found Filip Balaj who headed the ball in to secure the 1-0 victory for Zlate Moravce.

In the Relegation Group, MFK Ruzomberok managed to climb to second place after a close 1-0 victory over Pohronie which had to play the second half a man short. FK Senica left the precarious bottom of the standings, leaping up two spots to fourth thanks to a dominant three-goal first half in Nitra. MFK Zemplin Michalovce replaced its head coach earlier in the week but was no match for SKF Sered, losing 2-0 and falling to the bottom of the standings. Enditem
