KAMPALA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's football governing body has terminated the contract of its national team coach Johnathan McKinstry.

In a statement released on Monday, the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) did not give reasons for terminating McKinstry's contract, but had suspended him ahead of a key match last month.

"The head coach of the Uganda men's national team, Johnathan McKinstry, has today reached an agreement with FUFA to bring an end to his 18 months at the helm of the Uganda Cranes," said the statement.

"FUFA would like to thank coach McKinstry and his staff for the work and dedication to developing the Uganda Cranes during their tenure," the statement added.

Uganda appointed the Northern Irishman in September 2019 on a three-year contract. McKinstry, who replaced French tactician Sebastien Desabre, had previously coached the Sierra Leone and Rwanda national teams, in addition to a spell with SAIF Sporting Club in Bangladesh.

Apart from guiding Uganda to victory in the regional CECAFA Challenge Cup in 2019, where they beat Eritrea in the final, McKinstry failed to guide the national team past the group stage at the Africa Nations Championship held in Cameroon early this year.

Uganda will now have to hire a new coach ahead of the group stage of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers which begin in June this year. Uganda is placed in Group E alongside Mali, Rwanda and Kenya. Enditem
