LJUBLJANA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Terraces of bars and restaurants can now reopen in eight of Slovenia's 12 statistical regions, the authorities said here on Monday. Until April 25, outdoor dining and drinking is allowed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Bar and restaurant owners in the eight regions welcomed the news as they have had to stay closed since Oct. 23 last year.

Nevertheless, catering services must follow key safety measures. Among other things, the tables must be at least three meters apart; maximum four people are allowed to be at a table; and bar and restaurant staff will have to be tested for coronavirus every week.

Over the past six months, bars and restaurants could only offer home delivery or pickup services. In the Posavje region in southeastern Slovenia and in the Primorsko-Notranjska region terraces were allowed to open for a few days in March.

"The reopening of catering terraces will bring much-needed optimism to the people," said Simon Zajc, state secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, at a press conference last week. He urged both caterers and consumers to follow the instructions of the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ). "What will happen after one week depends on all of us and on how much we are willing to follow the rules," he stressed.

The provision of services for business entities is now also permitted throughout the country under certain conditions.

From Monday, the gathering of up to 100 people at rallies is allowed in Slovenia, provided they adhere to the health safety measures like social distancing and mask-wearing while indoors.

Slovenia recorded 234 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the fifth day in a row that the daily number of new infections declined week-on-week. The seven-day rolling average has dropped to 785, according to the NIJZ. Enditem
