Live COVID-19 updates: Chile reports 5,071 new daily cases

BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SANTIAGO -- Chile's Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday 5,071 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, bringing to 1,136,435 the total number of cases, as well as 40 more deaths to total 25,317.

For several weeks, the South American country has been facing another wave of COVID-19 infections, which has overwhelmed its critical hospital system.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 158 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, raising the total number in the country to 837,357.

The death toll from the virus rose by five to 6,345, while the number of patients in serious conditions decreased from 190 to 175, out of 287 hospitalized patients.

HAVANA -- Cuba reported 1,183 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, the highest record in one day since the onset of the pandemic on the island, bringing the accumulated total to 95,754 cases, as well as seven more deaths, to total 538, the Ministry of Public Health said.

The high number of infections in the last day reflects "the complexity of the epidemiological situation in the country, with a very high transmission rate in some regions," said Francisco Duran, the ministry's national director of hygiene and epidemiology.

NICOSIA -- Cyprus recorded an all-time high of 941 new coronavirus infections in one day since the outbreak of the pandemic in early March 2020, the Health Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The new cases were detected from some 57,000 tests, with the positivity rate rising to 1.66 percent.

TUNIS -- Tunisian Health Ministry on Tuesday reported 2,169 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections in the country to 289,230.

The death toll from the virus rose by 93 to 9,918 in Tunisia, the ministry said in a statement.

ANKARA -- Turkey on Tuesday confirmed 346 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, its highest daily death toll since the beginning of the outbreak, according to its health ministry.

Meanwhile, the ministry reported 61,028 new COVID-19 cases in Turkey, including 2,895 symptomatic patients, raising the total number in the country to 4,384,624.

RABAT -- Morocco's COVID-19 tally rose to 506,669 on Tuesday as 720 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours.

The death toll hit 8,959 with seven new fatalities, while 376 people are in intensive care units, according to a statement by the Ministry of Health.

DOHA -- The Qatari health ministry on Tuesday announced 885 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number in the Gulf state to 198,361, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 733 more recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 175,431, while the fatalities increased by five to 391, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA. Enditem
